Is it really easier to succeed today than it was before?

Lately, I've been really stunned how far the internet and content sharing has come. Literally every new day you can see a handful of new videos become viral, then all the famous Facebook pages share it and it becomes a meme and everyone knows about it. However, I've also noticed how fast that fame vanishes and how trivial that "fame" really is. Is it really easier to be a musician now with platforms like Soundcloud, YouTube and Spotifiy, where you can upload your work completely for free and have all the people in the world see your work? Was it really a lot harder bach then, when Led Zeppelin and The Doors were trying to make it happen? Not really. And here is why.

That "freedom" in this open wold of social media is exactly why it is becoming harder and harder to succeed. It tricks you into thinking that your goal is right aroun the corner, but it is really not. The main point is, on social media, your competition is ENDLESS. Everyone uploads their music, everyone writes a blog, everyone is a YouTuber and so on... and it keeps getting more saturated. The good thing is, the internet has made a big difference nonetheless simply because - everyone can do it nowadays! It doesn't matter if you are black, white, rich, poor... the people won't care. If they like the things you put out, they will watch it and buy it. The best way to stand out on the internet today is to work harder than everyone else and release good content that people are interested in. Of course, you can't just do it for the money, your content won't be raw, from the heart, and it will be visible, trust me. So, with all the competition around you, the best formula to make something happen on social media today is: hard work + doing something you extremely love + consistency (uploading daily). And there are no shortcuts, unfortunately... All in all, the people want something that will make their lives easier and make them feel good.

For example, let's take the "Cash me ousside" girl (If you don't know who she is, google her). She hasn't worked for all the attention she got on the Dr. Phil show. Her act just fired up the whole internet and she was everywhere. Now, that didn't require any work at all, she wasn't planning to become so famous, other people made her famous jut because she was so interesting to so many. She started selling her own merch a month later and became a too full of herself thinking she is somebody. That kind of fame vanishes sooner than it starts. There is nothing to keep her "fans" tied to her after she stops being interesting to them and that attention is just temporary. It is definitely a better idea to hustle, start your own business, blog or a channel and work continuously, making more fans day ater day. Long-term investment always pays off.

If we were to speak about the times when internet wasn't around, the situation back then was a lot different. Like I said, with more opportunities comes bigger and more serious competition. There weren't many bands in the USA during the 60's and 70's. If you started a band and started touring around the country, people would find out about it in no time. There wasn't music you could find on YouTube or just download something. Every single piece of music had to be bought in the store or you were required to pay to go and see your favorite artist live. So basically, my point is, the marketing at that time wasn't required like it is now. And bands were something really rare. First of all, the guitars and other equipment weren't so affordable. Not many musicians could afford their intruments. Only the wealthier were able to get in the game. So maybe, if you had been lucky enough to have the talent and wealthier parents, you could have succeeded with much less effort than these hustlers put in nowadays.
